Venereal Disease.
To the Editor of the Straits Times. Sir,-May I be allowed to trespass a
little on your space.
I cannot help but think the V. D. pro- ! blam has been and is being tackled the wrong way. I am not going to say any- thing about immorality. A man is the keeper of his own conscience.
What to my mind stands out clearly is that there is and always was a demand for certain services which up till recently was catered for by people who went to very considerable trouble and expense to keep fit and well, which after all was a simple business precaution from their point of view,
The trouble seems to have been that! although a woman may have examined and passed by a medical man
been. in the morning she may be infected by
a man the same afternoon and so pass, on the infection, not wilfully.
Now why should not the man examined and an "all clear" ticket given be him before he is allowed to indulge ? Then women would not be allowed to have connection unless the ticket was produced. It seems to me that this is a logical way of doing things and it is fifficult to understand why it has never been tried.
The sending away of the Japanese women has in my opinion made matters worse instead of better. I have known Singapore on and off over twenty years and am certain that promiscuity is worse now than it ever was. It doesn't pay to hide sores, Yours, etc.
